Este financiamiento puede tomar la forma de donación, recompensas, deuda o capital. Así como un híbrido para fondear proyectos de infraestructura.
Son tres los actores que participan en una transacción de Crowdfunding: los individuos que proponen la idea del proyecto a financiar, a quienes se identifican como emprendedores; los individuos que deciden financiar esa idea (fondeadores o inversionistas); y las plataformas que permiten a los emprendedores acercar su idea a los fondeadores, todo a través de una red de comunicación social basada en las tecnologías de información y comunicación.
El mecanismo se puede describir de la siguiente forma:
Los emprendedores deben presentar y dar a conocer su idea o proyecto a través de una campaña de difusión sobre la plataforma que utilicen. Una campaña implica la promoción de la idea, la definición del público objetivo, el material a utilizar (videos, fotos, etc.) y la gestión de las redes sociales a través de las cuales se lleva a cabo la difusión y la comunicación al público objetivo.
